History
Background
Sometime in 2008, media mogul Vic Del Rosario of VIVA media franchise decided to form a boyband under his recording company; VIVA Records.[1] First to be part of the project boyband was then stage performer Kiko Ramos followed by tv host and commercial model Hideaki Torio, ramp and commercial model Carlo Lazerna and underground band member and church choir singer Caleb Santos.[1][2] After series of trainings VIVA decided to add one more member; then theater actor and commercial model Arkin Del Rosario soon joined their line up.[1][2]Still unsatisfied, VIVA added two more members who happens to be twins; former Star Magic contract talent Melmar Magno and aspiring singer Meljohn Magno.[1][2] Several members joined and left but the last to seal the final eight members was the commercial model, aspiring actor and VIVA's contract talent AJ Muhlach.[1][2] All final eight members continued to train together for their singing and dancing skills and then worked on their debut album.[2]
XLR8 Group Name
XLR8 member Carlo Lazerna was the one who thought of the name for their group which was inspired by a character from an Americancartoon series Ben 10. XLR8; the cartoon character is an Omnitrix alien that resembles a semi-armored velociraptor, the base creature for the form's design.[3] XLR8 is pronounced as ‘’accelerate’’ in relation to its “Kineceleran”(portmanteau of the words 'kinetic and 'accelerate') nature that equates to its power and its speed in attacks and motion. [3] Thus, naming their boy group as such reflects the group’s success goals and artistry is in accelerating mode. They also named their official Fan Club as A.FM or “Accelerated for Music” relevant to their group name.
2010: Debut
XLR8's first live TV appearance was on Party Pilipinas on GMA 7 on March 28, 2010 where they performed their promotional song entitled "You're So Hot".
Controversies and Criticism
Fans of the KPOP group Super Junior accused XLR8 of copying the beat of the said KPOP group's song "Sorry, Sorry". Fans also complained that XLR8's album cover bore similarities to Super Junior's album cover for "Sorry, Sorry"
